The division of thoracic surgery of University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital was established in March 2013. It has adopted a multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment mode, and team members together with well-known experts in the United States, Hong Kong and mainland China provide patients with the best personalized treatment plan for all thoracic surgical diseases including lung nodules, lung cancer, esophageal cancer, myasthenia gravis, mediastinal tumors, rib tumors, benign and malignant pleural lesions, palmar hyperhidrosis, pulmonary bullae, chest trauma and other thoracic surgery related diseases. The original Three-Dimensional (3D) non-invasive precision positioning technology of small nodules in lung is international leading.

We have pioneered advanced surgical methods such as low-cost surgery, robotic lung surgery with full-robotic-arm, non-intubated robotic thymus surgery, and total endoscopic radical resection of esophageal cancer without abdominal assisted incision. And we pioneering proposed a minimally invasive surgical perioperative management norm for the rare disease "myasthenia gravis"。More than 300 minimally invasive surgeries have been chosen and carried out for myasthenia gravis patients. The surgery number and its related technology for the rare disease reached the international advanced level. Innovative low-cost surgical techniques make the cost of some surgeries, such as lung cancer surgery only one-third of the domestic average. An improved-original minimally invasive surgical technique for esophageal disease, greatly reduced surgical trauma and reduced postoperative complications. In recent years, dozens of highly difficult and complex chest tumor surgeries, which required reconstruction of large blood vessels have been completed successfully.

In 2020, the most advanced da Vinci robotic surgical system was introduced. Now robotic surgery has been employed for treatment of lung diseases, mediastinal tumors, myasthenia gravis and other thoracic diseases. The first international non-intubated da Vinci robotic surgery of minimally invasion for myasthenia gravis, and more than ten innovative full-robotic-arm radical resections for lung cancer were carried out successfully. Parts of related achievements have been continuously exhibited in international and domestic conferences, such as the World Lung Cancer Conference within two years, and they had been highly praised by peers. With our efforts, the incidence of perioperative complications of myasthenia gravis has been significantly reduced, making this high-risk surgery routine. And it received the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) Awards of 2021 Global Quality Improvement Category. In 2020, relying on Sanming Project of Medicine in Shenzhen, the "Guangzhou Respiratory Health Research Institute Professor He Jianxing Thoracic Tumor and Thoracic Disease Surgery Team" collaborated with us more closely. The partner team has opened Thoracic Surgery Clinic, Thoracic Surgery International Medical Center (IMC) Clinic, Thoracic Tumor Multi-Disciplinary Treatment (MDT) Clinic, End-stage Lung Disease Clinic, Advanced Lung Cancer and Critical Respiratory Disease Clinic, Lung Transplant Preoperative Evaluation and Postoperative Rehabilitation Clinic. These clinics were served by top domestic and abroad experts in the areas of thoracic surgery, oncology, respiratory medicine, lung transplantation, respiratory interventional therapy and other related areas.
