Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery——ENT-NHN
Department at The University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Hospital is one of the clinical disciplines within the surgical system. The department comprises: the Otorhinolaryngology Outpatient Clinic, the Chief Physician Outpatient Clinic for Otorhinolaryngology, the Associate Chief Physician Outpatient Clinic for Otorhinolaryngology, the Otology Outpatient Clinic, the Rhinology Outpatient Clinic, the HA Otorhinolaryngology Outpatient Clinic, the Laryngology Outpatient Clinic, the Chief Physician Outpatient Clinic for Otorhinolaryngology and Rhinoplasty/Reconstructive Surgery, the Associate Chief Physician Outpatient Clinic for Rhinology, and the Chief Physician Outpatient Clinic for Endoscopic Otorhinolaryngologic Microsurgery. The department houses general inpatient wards and IMC wards, with 11 outpatient consultation rooms equipped with independent examination and diagnostic rooms as well as treatment rooms. Currently, the department is outfitted with 11 comprehensive otorhinolaryngology treatment units, one vestibular rehabilitation apparatus, six sets of STORZ high-definition nasal endoscopy systems, five sets of XION endoscopic diagnostic and therapeutic systems, PENTEX electronic laryngoscope imaging diagnostic and therapeutic systems, Olympus electronic laryngoscope imaging diagnostic and therapeutic systems, ATMOS stroboscopic laryngoscope systems, voice analysis and evaluation systems, LEICA and ZEISS microscopes, LUMENIS carbon dioxide laser and low-temperature plasma surgical systems, MEDTRONIC comprehensive otorhinolaryngology power systems, SSTRYKER comprehensive power systems, pure-tone audiometry devices, Aurical nystagmus visualizers, Neuro-Audio.NET hearing testing platforms, and video EEG/sleep EEG analysis systems, among other advanced modern medical diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. These facilities provide a solid foundation for clinical practice, the development of new services and technologies, and corresponding research activities.
The department routinely performs endoscopic nasal surgery, endoscopic ear surgery, middle ear microsurgery, auditory nerve and lateral skull base surgery, laryngeal microsurgery, snoring surgery, head and neck maxillofacial tumor surgery, and orthognathic surgery. It demonstrates exceptional expertise in postoperative reconstruction following tumor surgeries and deformity correction. Additionally, the department serves as a national standardized residency training base, achieving simultaneous advancement in medical education and scientific research.
The Department of Otorhinolaryngology specializes in endoscopic minimally invasive treatments, hearing and speech rehabilitation, and vertigo rehabilitation. Current procedures include subtotal temporal bone resection, lateral temporal bone resection, FISCH subtemporal approach surgery, laser stapedectomy, cochlear implantation (with intraoperative hearing monitoring), modified mastoidectomy and tympanoplasty, endoscopic tympanoplasty and ossicular chain reconstruction, pulsatile tinnitus and sigmoid sinus stenosis surgery, eustachian tube occlusion, and eustachian tube dilation; endoscopic nasolacrimal sac ostomy, endoscopic orbital decompression, endoscopic resection of malignant tumors in the nasal cavity, sinuses, nasopharynx, and anterior skull base, as well as sublingual and subcutaneous desensitization therapy; laryngeal microsurgery and laser surgery under supportive laryngoscopy, laser treatment and balloon dilation for laryngeal stenosis, vocal cord drug injection, laryngoplasty, and vocal cord repositioning; correction of microtia, nasal deformity repair, and non-invasive correction of auricular deformities. The Department of Head and Neck Surgery is primarily responsible for surgical and reconstructive treatments of various benign and malignant tumors in the head and neck (excluding intracranial regions), including oral tumors (e.g., tongue cancer, cheek cancer, gingival cancer, maxillary bone malignancies), salivary gland tumors (benign and malignant tumors of the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands), pharyngeal tumors (e.g., tonsil cancer, hypopharyngeal cancer), laryngeal cancer, maxillary bone tumors and trauma (e.g., maxillary sinus cancer, maxillary bone cysts, maxillary bone fractures), and various types of maxillofacial developmental anomalies. Over the past decade, leveraging the advanced concepts and techniques of Hong Kong medical teams, numerous complex surgical procedures have been performed, including fibular flap reconstruction for bilateral mandibular bones, free jejunal reconstruction of the esophagus following cervical esophageal cancer resection, and endoscopic resection of recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Minimally invasive and endoscopic surgeries for salivary gland tumors have also been conducted. In collaboration with neurosurgery departments, intracranial bypass procedures were employed to save critically ill patients with massive nasopharyngeal carcinoma hemorrhage. Multidisciplinary collaborations with oncology departments have been established to develop optimal, scientifically tailored treatment plans for cancer patients.
