The Department of Pharmacy (DPH) combines excellent local and international pharmaceutical expertise and knowledge. In accordance with standards of national 3A hospitals and international certification, DPH provides "patient-centered" pharmaceutical services, including drug procurement, dispensing (outpatient/inpatient), management, teaching, scientific research and rational drug use consultation services. In addition, DPH is responsible for IV drug admixing service, adverse drug reaction monitoring, drug consultation, clinical pharmacy service and drug-related risk management. The department also undertakes training and continuing education of pharmacy professionals.      

　　The hospital places great emphasis on medication safety. Clinical pharmacists participate in ward rounds led by clinical professorial staff of the University of Hong Kong and overseas clinicians to ensure safe, effective and rational use of therapeutic drug treatment plan. Clinical pharmacists are actively involved in antimicrobial stewardship program. In AICU and CCU, pharmacists vet electronic prescriptions prior to dispensing coupled with the use of smart medication cabinet which helps manage drug distribution effectively. Clinical pharmacists conduct regular audits to ensure rational prescribing and attend clinical departments’ monthly meetings on quality and safety to analyze antimicrobials use, DDDs, medication incidents and adverse drug reactions, etc.

　　The hospital has set up a high quality Pharmacy Intravenous Admixture Service (PIVAS) unit operated by a team of well-trained pharmacy personnel adapting overseas best practice aseptic technique to prepare individualized  intravenous preparations, parenteral nutrition, antimicrobial agents and cytotoxic preparations. The Clinical Pharmacy Team has developed standardized chemotherapy prescription templates (Medication Administration Record (MAR), protocol for compounding, administration and quality assurance procedures to reduce the risk of medication error. On 26 May 2014, the hospital was accredited to become the first hospital in Shenzhen to provide centralized pharmacy intravenous admixture service.

　　The hospital has implemented smart automation hardware and software to improve drug dispensing efficiency and accuracy. The Outpatient Pharmacy has installed three sets of ultra- efficient automated dispensing machines and smart storage rack to ensure high efficiency and accuracy of the dispensing task. The Inpatient Pharmacy is equipped with two unit-dose packing machines to pack individual patient’s oral drugs into unit-dose packs with the advantages of high accuracy, high efficiency, and low contamination. A special automated machine is used to cross- check the accuracy of packed unit-dose drugs.

　　The Chinese Medicine Outpatient Pharmacy has installed four sets of innovative pre-mix Chinese medicine granules machines which are fully integrated with the Hospital Information System to provide a comprehensive solution for Chinese herbal granules dispensing, herbal medicines decoction service and oral gel compounding service.

　　Our pharmacists participate in the Hospital’s clinical trials on new drugs research.Over the past years, the Department of Pharmacy has organized a number of international clinical pharmacy conferences, diversified pharmacy forums and various continuous professional development training for both pharmacists and other healthcare staff. Since 2016, the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) has been engaged to provide a series of Pharmacotherapy and Clinical Practice training programs: full-week on-site clinical pharmacy practice training in small class and full day seminars open to all local pharmacists. Internally, we provide a 2-year structured clinical pharmacist training program to help pharmacyinterns become competent clinical pharmacists. We also provide training to undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacy students of The University of Hong Kong and Jinan University.
