Established in October 2013, Respiratory Medicine routinely diagnoses and treats common and rare respiratory diseases, including COPD, asthma, bronchiectasis, pulmonary embolism, interstitial lung diseases, lung tumors, respiratory sleep disorders, critical care diseases, and other rare lung diseases. At present, the supervisor of department is Consultant Pro. Ye Xiuwen and Consultant Dr. Rong Lei, and the team has a total of 17 doctors, including two consultant doctors, two associate consultant doctors, 4 senior doctors, and 9 resident doctors, including 1 doctor and 12 masters. There are 56 beds in two wards of A7W and A6W. The bed occupancy rate is above 85%., and 180 to 220 patients are discharged every month. The outpatient clinic has general respiratory clinic, and 7 sub-specialty clinics including pulmonary rehabilitation clinic, lung tumor screening clinic, smoking cessation clinic, chronic cough clinic, COPD clinic, asthma clinic, sleep clinic. The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Clinic was the first in Shenzhen to develop a pulmonary rehabilitation program with exercise therapy as central. In August 2016, it was approved as a unit of "National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Diseases Medical Cluster ". In 2017, we introduced "Professor Fan Chung's Integrated Airway Disease Team" from Imperial College London, UK (National Heart and Lung Institute NHL), Sanming project of medicine in Shenzhen. In November 2018, it was awarded as the "Smoking Cessation Outpatient Demonstration Base in Guangdong Province", which is one of the first hospitals in Guangdong province. In August 2018, "Lung Nodule Diagnosis and Treatment Sub-Center of HKU Shenzhen Hospital, China Lung Cancer Alliance" was approved as one of the first cooperative units of lung Nodule diagnosis and treatment of Lung Cancer Alliance in the city.

【Service features and advantages】

1、COPD clinic

    The COPD clinic provides chronic disease management services for COPD patients in accordance with the "evaluation-treatment-follow-up management" model recommended by the global guidelines for COPD (GOLD) initiated by Peter J Barns, who is Sanming project of Respiratory medicine. Professional medical staff guide the correct use of inhaled drug devices. The joint smoking cessation Clinic, lung rehabilitation center and lung function Center provide all-round services to patients. Including: strengthening early application of lung function screening for COPD, guiding smoking COPD patients to quit smoking successfully, applying international diagnosis and treatment standards for pulmonary rehabilitation, and developing personalized "exercise prescription" for each COPD patient. With the arrival of Hong Kong and Macao pharmaceutical machinery link, the oral drug roflumilast for COPD group D patients came to our hospital. Our hospital has become the only unit in China with this drug.

2、Asthma clinic

　　Since its establishment three years ago, the asthma Clinic has cooperated with Sanming Project of the Imperial College of Engineering chronic Airway Inflammation Disease Institute. Our team members have been to the UK and Hong Kong for many times to study and establish the mode of "doctors-pharmacists-nurses" to cooperate and provide all-round services to patients. Thousands of asthma patients at our clinic with the help of the normalized treatment of asthma, has fully understanded asthma, accepted asthma and rational standardization drug, to reduce acute episodes, emergency medical treatment/hospitalization frequency, decrease stopping oral glucocorticoids, achieve smooth breathing, working status back to normal life, reduce medical health care resource consumption, etc. Since the establishment of specialized outpatient service, it has been trusted by many asthma patients. From the initial half-day outpatient service per week, it was extended to one day per week in April 2019 and increased to 1.5 days per week in August 2020. The patient-oriented adjustment of opening time and number source has greatly solved the problem of difficult appointment and registration for asthma patients. In 2021, Hong Kong University Shenzhen Hospital was the first "international New Drug Access" pilot institution to formulate two biological targeted drugs for severe asthma with high eosinophilic granular particles: Anti-IL-5R Benralizumab and anti-IL-4R Dupilumab were included in the first batch of "Hong Kong Drug Express" international new Drug list of our hospital, which can control asthma symptoms, reduce the dosage of glucocorticoid and greatly reduce the symptoms of idiopathic dermatitis. In combination with omalizumab, we now have biologically targeted agents for severe/refractory asthma in two major classes of Th2 inflammatory phenotypes.

3、Chronic cough Clinic

      Established in May 2021, the Chronic Cough Clinic mainly provides diagnosis and treatment services for chronic cough of unknown cause, cough variant asthma, eosinophilic bronchitis, upper airway cough syndrome, interstitial lung disease, bronchiectasis, chronic bronchitis, drug-related cough and other diseases

4、Respiratory interventional therapy

    Since 2018, the department has set up a pulmonary tumor screening clinic and set up a multidisciplinary pulmonary nodule’s clinic (MDT clinic) every week in collaboration with the department of thoracic surgery, radiology, Oncology, and interventional department, to carry out a "full information multidimensional" evaluation of pulmonary nodules diagnosis process for pulmonary nodules patients across the country. We use "5A" process evaluation, including: "ask (patient information collection), assess (evaluate clinical examination), advice (preliminary management solution), arrange (department of referrals), auxiliary (MDT)" five links such as service for patients with pulmonary nodules, homogenization for assessment of lung nodules service, consistency, the result of diagnosis, multidisciplinary consensus recommendations. Interventional respiratory science is one of the key directions in the development of respiratory department, and the number of cases operated by ultrasonic bronchoscopy/electronic bronchoscopy is steadily increasing every year, which solves the thorny problems in clinical diagnosis and treatment. At present, our department has exclusively carried out lung biopsy by bronchoscopy under X-ray fluoroscopy in Shenzhen. In 2017, we develcoped ultrasonic bronchoscopy lymph node puncture biopsy (EBUS-TBNA). Currently, the number of cases performed annually ranks the top among all hospitals in Shenzhen, providing an effective method for lung cancer diagnosis, staging and reevaluation after lung cancer treatment. In 2020, a new project of enhanced reality navigation bronchoscopy will be launched to further improve the positive rate and safety of pathological diagnosis of lung lesions. At the same time, broncho alveolar lavage fluid, airway balloon dilation and cryotherapy were carried out to achieve good clinical results.

5、Sleep Center

     Sleep Medicine Center of HKU-Shenzhen Hospital was established on August 2, 2017. Sleep center is located in the hospital wards A7 floor of the east, with 5 standard examination room of sleep, between 7 beds, equipped with more sleep chart recording equipment, portable sleep apnea monitoring equipment, family sleep monitoring instrument, wrist oxygen meter, automatic double and single level sleep breathing machine and other advanced inspection instruments and therapeutic apparatus. The sleep Center of our department has established standardized sleep center diagnosis and treatment procedures and service standards by referring to the service procedures and standards of the Sleep Center of Queen Mary Hospital of the Hong Kong University and The Sleep Center of Harefield Hospital in London. Sleep center can provide overnight polysomnography monitoring, portable sleep monitoring, home sleep monitoring, manual pressure titration, automatic pressure titration, daytime multiple nap test and other medical services. The sleep center mainly treats obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, central sleep apnea syndrome, complex sleep apnea syndrome, obesity hypopnea syndrome, snoring, idiopathic narcolepsy, narcolepsy, etc.

6、Pulmonary Rehabilitation

     The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center of the Hong Kong University (HKU) Shenzhen Hospital was officially established in 2018-03. The pulmonary rehabilitation center is located on the 2nd floor and 7th floor of Building A, Inpatient Department HKU-SZH, covering an area of about 300 square meters, with 3 medical running tables, 3 medical power bicycles, 1 multi-functional muscle strength trainer, multiple sets of elastic belts, rollers, vibrating rods, etc. The pulmonary rehabilitation center is equipped with rehabilitation doctors, rehabilitation nurses, physical therapists, clinical pharmacists, psychotherapists, and other pulmonary rehabilitation teams. Since its establishment, pulmonary rehabilitation center has provided lung rehabilitation services for patients with chronic respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary fibrosis, bronchiectasis, asthma, lung cancer,lung transplantation, lung volume reduction surgery, including outpatient lung rehabilitation and inpatient lung rehabilitation.

In 2019, Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center became a member of the Respiratory Rehabilitation Cooperation group of "National Respiratory Clinical Research Center，China-Japan Friendship Hospital Respiratory Specialist Allied Unit". In October 2021, it was approved by The Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine as "Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Nursing Specialist Training Base of The Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine" by the association of Cardiac Rehabilitation.

7、Smoking cessation clinic

      At the end of January 2015, the smoking cessation clinic was established, which is the earliest smoking cessation clinic in Guangdong Province. In the beginning, the clinic was opened half a day a week, but now the clinic is opened on Thursday every week. Now the clinic is attended by 2 attending doctors in turn, and 2 health promotion office staff and 3 pharmacists are responsible for follow-up and consultation. The annual average number of outpatients exceeds 500, and the total number of patients is more than 2,000, of which the return visit rate is about 30%. Smoking cessation clinic use "assessment - intervention - treatment" combination model, combining motivation type interview methods psychological and behavior intervention, to help smokers quit, again by pharmacists, health promotion office staff to join the tobacco control team, participate in health education and patient follow-up work, the first Shenzhen "doctor pharmacist - health promotion office" in quitting smoking process. The department is equipped with carbon monoxide detector for free monitoring of patients. After comprehensive assessment of patients including questionnaire and education, doctors will conduct intervention and treatment, followed by one-year follow-up. In early 2018, procedures for Smoking Cessation Outpatient Department of Shenzhen Hospital of The University of Hong Kong (HKU) integrated all smoking cessation services in the outpatient department of the hospital, including brief smoking cessation intervention in general practice and acupuncture therapy in traditional Chinese medicine. Smoking cessation Clinic specially compiled the smoking cessation Clinic follow-up SOP to optimize the management process of smoking cessation clinic, which is convenient for promotion and business expansion. Promote smoking cessation services. Also because of the process standard, careful, patient service has won the majority of smoking cessation patients’ praise.

8、Pulmonary function examination room

      Since its establishment in 2013, the pulmonary function examination room of our department has successively developed pulmonary ventilation function examination, bronchial dilation test, diffusion function examination and nitric oxide expiratory assay, providing basic clinical services of pulmonary function for all out-patients and inpatients of the hospital. By the end of 2020, it was approved as a training and practice base for lung function in the Work Plan of Early Screening and Intervention Ability Improvement Project for Grassroots Respiratory Diseases in Shenzhen. Mainly undertake practical operation training tasks, including operation teaching, operation drill, practical operation quality control and evaluation, practical operation assessment and so on. Up to now, a total of 35 doctors/nurses have received further training, with 100% satisfaction.
